Volunteers don’t always know the impact they make by showing up and helping. Stephanie Wenzel certainly couldn’t have known the lasting legacy her short tenure as an LC4 volunteer has inspired. While bravely enduring cancer, Stephanie loved to help at the Canine Care Center, making enrichment treats, helping with events and showing love and holding hope for the hundreds of dogs who come into our care every month. When Stephanie left the pain of her struggle on October 1, 2023, our hearts broke for her family.
Inspired by the volunteer work she did at The Kitty Brew (cat café!) in Cincinnati during treatments, Stephanie and her mom, Diana, started volunteering at LC4 in March of 2023. She loved animals and they loved her. Even when she wasn’t feeling well, Stephanie still showed up for the dogs. Stephanie and Diana took dozens of dogs to their home for breaks from the shelter. She loved seeing them unwind, relax, and have a blast in their backyard. Even in her absence, Stephanie continues to help the dogs. In lieu of flowers, she requested that donations be made to Cutie’s Fund, which helps pay for emergency medical costs of dogs who come into our care.
Knowing how much she loved hockey, family friends reached out to Brandon Hawkins, the current captain of the Toledo Walleye, asked for a favor and he delivered! Mr. Hawkins had the entire team autograph a jersey for Stephanie! Sadly, she passed away before she received it.
To honor her love for the LC4 dogs, her friends and family decided to raffle the jersey off to benefit Cutie’s Fund in memory of Stephanie. The winner will be drawn on Halloween, Stephanie’s favorite holiday, at 8 pm. Tickets are available for purchase until noon on October 31, 2023. Tickets are $5 for 1 and $20 for 5 and can be purchased with cash, PayPal, or check at LC4.
Visit LC4 at 410 S. Erie St., Toledo, OH 43604 Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. or Saturday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to get your tickets. Bring a bag of Halloween candy and $25 and you can even take a dog home with you. Or get your tickets when you bring your family for Trunk-or-Treat Saturday, Oct. 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. We hope you show up in honor of our dear friend Stephanie, who gave countless hours of her life to serving our dogs.
Just be like Stephanie and show up.
