Lucas County Canine Care & Control will pause owner surrenders and waive impound fees during move

TOLEDO, Ohio — Lucas County Canine Care & Control (LC4) is preparing for an exciting new chapter as the department moves into its brand-new facility.

To facilitate a seamless move, the shelter will be closed to the public September 29 through October 3 while operations transition from 410 S. Erie St. to 1301 Monroe St. in Toledo.

LC4 will open its new doors to the public on Saturday, October 4 at 11 a.m.

Lucas County Canine Control Officers who encounter a stray dog in the field during this time will make every effort to reunite that dog with its family before bringing it back to the shelter. Additionally, in an effort to return as many dogs as possible to their homes, LC4 will waive the impounding fees for any dog impounded from September 29 through October 3 that is reclaimed between October 4 and October 8. If the dog does not have a current license, individuals must purchase a license in order to reclaim their dog. In Lucas County, an annual dog license is $25.

In order to ensure a smooth transition for the dogs currently in the care of LC4, the department will temporarily pause owner surrenders from September 22 through October 3. The department’s focus during this time will be on safely transporting, settling, and supporting the dogs moving to the new LC4 building.

“We can’t wait to welcome the public into our brand-new facility next month,” said Terra Bundy, Deputy Director of LC4. “Our priority right now is to make sure every LC4 pup gets the safe, calm transition they deserve, and that means focusing fully on the dogs already in our care during the move.”

Beginning October 4, LC4 will resume accepting owner surrenders by appointment only as part of an ongoing effort to better serve both dogs and families in our community by providing structured intake appointments to allow for more individualized attention and support.

As of today, more than 70 adoptable dogs are searching for new homes at the Lucas County Canine Care & Control Center located at 410 S. Erie St. New dogs become available for adoption daily, and can be viewed online at www.lucascountydogs.com. If you already have a dog at home and are thinking about adding another, please be sure to bring your resident dog for a meet and greet. Families with children are also strongly encouraged to bring them along to help choose their new four-legged friend.
